At last night’s annual Country Music Association Awards, up-and-coming country artist Chris Stapleton not only performed a fantastic duet with friend and R&B singer Justin Timberlake, but he also cleaned house in the awards portion of the show. Stapleton won all three categories he was nominated for, including Male Vocalist of the Year.

2015 CMA Awards:

Male Vocalist of the Year
New Artist of the Year
Album of the Year (Traveller)

As noted by the “New Artist of the Year” award he won, Stapleton wasn’t widely known heading into last night.

So, who exactly is Chris Stapleton?

The Mercury Nashville recording artist from Lexington, Kentucky is an award-winning song-writer and former lead singer of The SteelDrivers. He has written six numbers one hit songs and has written for big-time artists such as George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Adele, Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley. So he has been well-known in the songwriting business for years.

As for his singing career, Stapleton was lead singer of The SteelDrivers when they debuted their self-titled album in 2008. Stapleton left the band in April 2010, and founded a southern rock group called The Jompson Brothers. He began his solo career and signed onto Mercury Nashville in 2013, releasing his debut single “What Are You Listening To?”

His debut solo album Traveller, for which he won the CMA last night, was released on May 5 of this year. And the rest, as they say, is history. The 37-year old is now a household name thanks to his big night at the CMAs on November 4, 2015.
