Camryn Wilson is a 16-year old aspiring singer-songwriter from the North Carolina area. After competing at a singing competition a few years ago and realizing her talent, Camryn began recording music covers for Youtube and, shortly after that, began her song-writing career. She just came out with her first single, “Think I’m in Love,” via iTunes and her Youtube page last year.

Last Thursday she took time out of her day to answer some of our questions regarding her music and upcoming music/shows:

Music-Overload: We’d like to start out by asking how and when you first got into music?

Camryn Wilson: “I got into music about two years ago. I didn’t really know I was good at it, and then I tried at a competition called “Carolina Singing Star.” Basically my whole story is I met another artist, he came up and talked to me and he introduced me to his producer, who is now my producer.”

M-O: You came out with a single last year. How long has the song-writing, for you, been going on. Did you first start singing, and then the song-writing came later on?

Camryn: “I did a couple covers first, just so I can get the feel of what the recording is like. And then I started writing a couple months after that.”

M-O: It looks like you just kind of dove right in (to the music/song-writing business), what has been your approach when it comes to song-writing?

Camryn: “I really just wanted to start writing and getting my stuff out there. And a way we do that is to come up with a back track, and then I’ll go back over it later and we’ll just start writing the lyrics and melody. And then we’ll go ahead and record it.”

M-O: You came out with the single last year. What kind of feedback have you received from the single since its release, a lot of positive response?

Camryn: “Yes, I did get positive feedback. I also got a lot of suggestions. Things like ‘maybe you should do this…’ or ‘maybe add a little more of this…’ So I definitely got a lot of good advice from fans on social media.”

M-O: So far over the last couple of years, what has been one of the biggest benefits of your music career?

Camryn: “Well it has really just built up my confidence a lot, because I used to be not very confident with myself.”

M-O: Considering you’re still in high school, it must be tough to balance the two (school work and a music career). Do you currently have any long-term plans for your music career, or is it just something you plan on doing on the side for now?

Camyn: “It’s more of a side thing right now, because it’s hard to focus completely on it. I’m not saying I don’t focus 100% on it (the music), because I do. But I also have to focus on school as well.

I think it just depends on where this takes me (the music career).”

Camryn is currently working on writing and recording her first EP, and will be playing a number of upcoming shows over the next few months, all of which we’ve listed below and can also be seen on her website:
